I'g constantly testing out different list-making methods, tools and apps, merely I haven't done a not bad job of sharing all of those methods with yous.
To-do lists aren't i-size-fits-all. Everyone'due south list-making style is dissimilar, and unlike methods work improve for different things. Some methods are crawly for managing complex projects, while others are fantastic for keeping rail of basic chores around the house.
Today marks the beginning of a brand new serial on the web log called "List-Making Methods," a serial where all of us list-making fanatics go to geek out, and where those of you struggling with your to-practice lists can find some advice and inspiration. My goal is to share a variety of listing-making methods that I'm using so you lot are armed with plenty of ammo for being more productive and attacking your to-do list. If your to-do list isn't working for you, information technology's fourth dimension to try out a unlike method! There'due south more one style to keep rails of your to-dos.
This "List-Making Methods" series isn't going to be a regularly scheduled i, it'due south instead a mutual theme of blog posts I'll be sharing throughout the year. Whenever I accept a new list-making method I'one thousand loving, either digital or paper, I'll spill the details with you lot in a new installment in this series. Sound good? Awesome. Let's dive into today's list-making method: the note card to-practise list.
Lately, I've been testing out a new to-practise list method that I recollect you're going to like because 1) information technology'south super basic, 2) it'south really cheap, and 3) it'southward colorful. I'k calling it the "Notation Card To-Do List Method."
This method is so basic that I wondered if it was worth blogging nearly, but I've honestly been loving it and so much that I just had to share. Information technology'south non rocket science nor is it fancy, but it'south bones and information technology gets the job done. Well, I hateful to say is that it gets the job of list-making done. I should disembalm that it doesn't actually do the work for you lot. I haven't figured that one out nevertheless, only when I find a list-making method that automatically cleans your house for you, I'll exist sure to permit you lot know 😉
The Note Bill of fare To-Practise List
I've been using this method primarily on the weekends when I have a lot of chores, errands and projects to practise around the house. It'southward really basic and flexible, which is perfect for those kinds of tasks.
For this to-do list, all y'all demand is a pen and a pack of colorful annotation cards. Y'all could use the boring white ones I suppose, but that'south no fun. This is your excuse to go to the office supply store and pick upward a pack with fun colors. Later on all, colorful office supplies make whatsoever task improve (that'southward a fact).
I cut all of my note cards in half considering I like the smaller size, and and so I get twice as many cards out of my pack. You tin determine if you prefer whole cards or halves.
For this method, each to-do gets its own note carte du jour. You lot write downward all of your to-do's and end up with a lilliputian stack of cards, as opposed to the numbered items y'all'd write on a traditional newspaper to-do list. When you have a lot on your heed, sit down with a stack of note cards and kickoff writing everything downward on individual cards. This is often chosen brain dumping.
Once yous have your stack of to-dos, yous can shuffle them up randomly (works keen for a agglomeration of cleaning tasks y'all despise doing), y'all tin sort them by priority or projection, or you could divide them into smaller stacks and assign to days of the week. The dazzler of writing your to-dos on separate cards is that y'all tin can rearrange them notwithstanding you want, which makes this a very flexible method.
Once your list is sorted, it's fourth dimension to start tackling tasks 1-past-1, beginning with the card at the height of your stack. I can't help you much with this part. You just take to do whatever it is you lot're supposed to be doing. You lot know, the hard part of listing-making.
And my F-A-Five-O-R-I-T-E part near this process (and whatsoever list, for that matter) comes when you cease a job. You get the satisfaction of crumpling that task's annotation carte into a ball in your fist and throwing it in the trash tin can. That feeling of satisfaction is magical. In one case you toss away one, you'll desire to go along that momentum going and see how many more cards you can crumple upwardly today. Can you tell I similar to make games for myself?
There are so many reasons that I'm excavation this list-making method right now:
- It's basic. Sometimes the simplest methods are the best. I dearest trying out different list-making tools, simply those oftentimes have way more features that y'all demand for your basic to-practise list.
- It'south flexible. Since every to-exercise has its own annotation carte du jour, information technology's easy to rearrange and add to your listing. I like to have my paper to-do lists neat, then I end up rewriting them if I have many changes. The note menu method avoids that problem.
- It's visual. I'm a highly visual person, so seeing that deck of to-dos is very motivating to me. I tin can come across all of the items I need to practise, and I tin lookout man the stack get smaller the longer I work.
- Information technology's great for brain dumping. If you have a lot of things swirling effectually in your heed, it's awesome to sit downwardly with a stack of blank note cards and write out all your thoughts. No need to categorize them or put them in whatever order, but get them down on the cards.
- It'south easy to sort. Once I have a stack of to-dos, I can sort them by order of importance or group them by projection. I oft divide my cards upward into stacks for each mean solar day of my weekend, when I tackle the bulk of my household to-dos.
- It's satisfying. You know how much you dear checking things off your newspaper to-practise list? Well, this method is that feeling times 100. When you end a job, I highly recommend crumpling that note bill of fare into a wad and throwing it in the trash. I'll be honest, this is my favorite function. I'll sit down on the couch with my laptop for a couple of hours and crank out a agglomeration of tasks. As I complete tasks, I wad up the note cards and toss them on the floor. When I finish working and see the pile of crumpled note cards on the flooring, it feels most equally good as conquering the world (okay, that might exist exaggerated, simply nonetheless).
- They can be given away. This method would piece of work really well for shared chores around the house. Write out cards for all of the cleaning and errands and lay them out on the tabular array or hang them on the refrigerator. Then you and your spouse get to have turns choosing tasks that you want to do simply similar picking teams in gym class. Or, y'all can make a game of information technology with your unabridged family and hang up tasks for the week, with the rule that each person must consummate 1 task every day.
- It's cheap. This is a no-frills listing-making method. No fancy apps to download or materials to buy. All yous need is a stack of note cards.
