I am beyond excited about this ! Even though we are even so a few years away from this, I take been wondering what nosotros will use later on. Later on working through many levels of this curriculum I feel confident that MBTP works wonderful for our family ! I honestly recall that now curriculum is absolutely perfect and you accept to adapt, alter, tweak things forth the style. But MBTP works cracking for u.s. and I am pretty sure we volition keep going with it for a long time…. I am excited for the years to come !!
If yous are curious about the curriculum itself, bank check out my other posts. I am hoping to grab up on many units and re-blog many of them in the side by side few weeks. If you have questions, get out a message 🙂
Happy Homeschooling !
With the upcoming new pic release of the BFG Roald Dahl's books are everywhere again. Oh how I beloved it. I honey that these archetype books are coming back out of the corners, getting new cute, updated covers and kids are getting excited about reading them. My picayune half-dozen year onetime has discovered more than and more of his books in the last few weeks. She has read
and
Well, she all the same needs to read the BFG. Since information technology is part of the MBTP curriculum in 8-10 we went back and along deciding if to read it now or afterwards with the studies, simply we figured information technology is more important to just read information technology before the actually sees the movie. And at that place is no way I would brand her wait that long to see the movie ! We are across excited to go see it in the theaters, I retrieve it will be 1 of our highlights for the summer !!
With the girls upcoming birthdays in summer I accept been on the hunt for fun things already. Yesterday I came beyond a fun new upcoming release !!
Oh how fun will this be !?! Roald Dahl actually has an astonishing talent with words,so often i hear the girls only laugh out loud and giggle over his fun stories and the amazing word plays he has created. When you read his books, you really step into a whole new globe. You feel the characters and get to know them. Each of his books has won a special identify in our hearts ! I know this picayune dictionary will be then much fun to use and bring back many of the crazy words Roald Dahl uses in his books :))
Review
"It's difficult to find the right give-and-take to limited our levels of excitement around the 'Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary.' Squacking? Jumpsquiffling? Gigantuous? Roald Dahl's inventive, playful utilise of linguistic communication is such a key chemical element of his writing, whether he was using existing words in his own mischievous manner or inventing extra-usual new ones. It is wonderful to have this dictionary compiled with such expertise, passion and wit past Dr. Susan Rennie and the team at OUP. There could be no more plumbing equipment fashion to pay tribute to Roald Dahl in the twelvemonth of celebrations for his centenary. Best of all, every bit a fully-performance lexicon for readers and writers anile 8 and to a higher place, I hope information technology serves as a swashboggling source of inspiration for a whole new generation of storytellers."

We are however playing take hold of up with 9-11 MBTP but are enjoying information technology big fourth dimension. This is another Unit she has one time once again been looking frontward to and so have I honestly. The books included with this lesson are incredible.
As a lensman myself, one-time photographs always enthrall me. Similar I said, I enjoyed this unit of measurement a lot myself. The showtime two books go with the social report unit of measurement Immigration.
And we as well added
And of course this is the main book for the literature unit.
There are also some great video'south suitable for this age range. I added a few to the list.
During one of the lessons you will also visit and tour the Ellis Island museum. Isn't it astonishing what we can do with technology nowadays ? The links are provided in the curriculum.
http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/tour/alphabetize.htm
And you will as well get a glimpse of how immigrants lived in the tenements.
So much good stuff on these websites lonely.

I sure wish we could take a trip to NY correct now and see some of these historic sites, luckily this fun family unit has taken many trips for us and its always fun watching and exploring with them. If you have amazon prime number y'all tin can lookout this episode for free ( you might find it on youtube as well)
There are also some big writing assignments in this unit and be fix to put aside some fourth dimension for the the cocked projects, like making a chapeau design and making a quilt at the terminate of the story !
Nosotros ended the unit with an amazing final project, a story quilt about the house of tailors !!
These two units (9-11) accept been challenging and fun at the same time ( mainly challegning for me because of all the extra time with experiments rofl ). Since I had read a few reviews about the Cay ahead of time, I had decided to read the novel earlier my daughter would start it. I had never read it before until now, but thought this story was really slap-up and I'chiliad excited to read it together and share information technology now with my daughter. I think even though it qualifies as a classic already, it is a book that even in today's fourth dimension would be so valuable to read.
Hither is a bully little slideshow with some smashing full general info about the volume and story line
The story takes place during the beginning of Earth War Ii. This lesson only gives a brief introduction into earth war II since it will be covered in great detail in level ten-eleven. There volition exist a few activities about this and we struggled finding some good textile to get a brief introduction, and I wished MBTP would have added a short book to this Unit of measurement. Even though my daughter is somewhat familiar with the outlines of the state of war, a nice overview would accept been made things a little easier. This is a subject area that has such depth it is difficult to just google something without spending days reading. Of course there is always thought share and many of our awesome " Movingbeyondthepage groups" where many moms have some bully links set to ship to yous.
For example, this one . ( if it is stuck on the whole playlist, skip ahead to #xv thats nearly WWII)
Exploring Curacao and the carribean islands was a much more than pleasant subject. This was incredible fun, nosotros visited many websites and likewise got help from our friends " Travelkids" as they visited the island. I swear they take been to some of the coolest places.
We likewise enjoyed studying the island fine art.
http://world wide web.bernardhoyes.com/
In Lesson two we explored Curacao fifty-fifty deeper and I found a not bad website to larn more about import- consign, detailed about Curacao ( and many other countries).

In the literature unit you lot volition piece of work and review some grammar, subject field/ verb agreements, comma usage, prepositions and larn to work with unlike transitions for sentences. I'm glad these came up in this unit of measurement, since we take been struggling a little with some of these (transitions for judgement beginning particularly). I always like the mix MBTP offers, a little Grammer here, some science there, it never feels so overwhelming or boring.
We also spent a lot of fourth dimension studying sharks ! And coral reefs… We however have a great listing of movies to watch that are currently on Amazon Prime number !
The volume provided through MBTP about coral reefs is likewise a pretty expert pick and gives a deep understanding about the ocean earth. She had no trouble explaining me everything later on, lol.
Nosotros finished today with a super fun experiment from the Ocean's life Scientific discipline volume ( which I take merely seen has been replaced to a different one recently 😦 . I hope the experiment is in there as well, it was so simple and worked so well !!
( the experiment is #eighteen on the playlist , sorry sometimes the links give me trouble and it just adds the whole playlist 😉 )
Here are a few more examples from this Unit. Delight don't heed the few spelling mistakes on her paper 😉 Nosotros effort non to nitpick around her too much 😉
Hope you lot enjoyed out glimpse into the Cay and ocean life 🙂
We are still super new to our area here in southern Oregon, and are even so discovering new places, new events all the fourth dimension. Last week I found out near the Jacksonville Chinese New years festival. How exciting, since we literally but discussed this with MBTP vi-8.
After being home for nearly a week sick, I could not wait to go. Unfortunately I overlooked the time for the actual parade and we got there just to see the end of the parade, we literally walked up the street with the concluding people walking downwardly. What a thwarting. After a few minutes discussing our options we decided to still hang out a bit anyways and discover the town and maybe a few other events that were supposed to be going on throughout the solar day. Luckily we still found some fun and the girls nonetheless got to feel a piddling bit of Chinese new twelvemonth fun ! They played some Chinese children'south games, made some crafts, explored Chinese zodiac signs and lots more than ! It was a fun 24-hour interval !
If you lot have been following me, or reading about Moving Across the Folio elsewhere ( the curriculum we primarily use) than you know that it is literature based. Throughout the levels your children go exposed to some astonishing literature, a lot of them beautiful classic children'southward novels that accept stood the test of time.
I am a book lover and so are my children, simply we love a well made movie also. I accept tried to teach my children to always read the actual book first, if there is a movie out already. Oftentimes as a piffling reward they get to watch the moving-picture show afterward, and their excitement and anticipation is so much bigger than with whatever other movies we simply spotter. It is exciting to me to hear their opinions, to come across if their imagination was similar to what was shown in the movies and if they call back the film did the book justice. For example when my oldest starting time started reading Harry Potter. I but just had to sigh a little and nod in agreement when my daughter realized how much of Harry Potter they just had to cutting out from the books to make the movies possibly. I know she loved the movies, and was amazed, but I know the books hold more treasures for her than the movies can ever prove.
With MBTP you will come across many books that have been turned into a film. And in some of the units y'all will be asked to lookout the movie with your children, possibly write a comparison or opinion about the movie itself. I have non seen every one of these, and especially with movies, I google a lot to read some reviews and opinions. If at that place is some business concern I obviously lookout the movies before my kids get to meet them. Merely similar with everything else, everyone needs to make their own decision if these movies are appropriate for their child.

We have been using MBTP for quite some time now ( we did all of of v-seven, working on 6-8, some of 7-9, all of 8-10, and working on 9-eleven with my oldest) and I often find myself answering a lot of questions and helping people with choosing if the curriculum is right for them. In the end I tell most people, unless you try it, you will probably not find out. Only in that location are a few things to consider in making the first steps of figuring out if the curriculum is worth considering. Now is a expert fourth dimension to consider buying a exam unit. The leap fling will be happening more likely in early spring time again and maybe, merely maybe you have might up your heed by and so if y'all want to order a whole year set and volition be able to take advantage of the 10%. Nosotros would greatly capeesh if y'all order through our web log , it will not cost you annihilation extra, yous are simply helping another homeschool family out continuing our take a chance of learning.
- What is a literature based curriculum ?
A literature-based curriculum uses mainly "living books". Books that are fun, engage your kid in a real story instead of a textbook. Yous might find that you already own a lot of these books, a lot of classics are included in the wonderful selection for each level every bit well as many fun, historical fiction books.
(Historical fiction tells a story that is set up in the past. That setting is usually real and drawn from history, and oft contains actual historical persons, merely the principal characters tend to exist fictional. Writers of stories in this genre, while penning fiction, effort to capture the manners and social atmospheric condition of the persons or fourth dimension(s) presented in the story, with due attending paid to period particular and fidelity.)
My kids are bookworms and take been independent readers from early on, and then this curriculum fits our needs very well and we have truly enjoyed just about every book. Later on all it is nevertheless a box curriculum though. A box curriculum is designed for many, many children all at the same time. It will not suit everybody and just considering it is correct for us does not hateful information technology will be right for you.
You can discover more nigh what a literature based curriculum is here.
- My child is nevertheless a wearisome reader ? Volition this mean this curriculum volition be a bad fit for united states of america ?
Not at all. In the younger levels most frequently you are withal encouraged to read the books with your child. Read aloud, talk and respond questions about the volume together, just share fourth dimension together while learning. This style you too encourage and teach your child to written report independently in the later levels, starting 9-11 the curriculum is directly addressed towards the student. Some parents still cull to read aloud during many of the later studies just considering it is fun and builds a not bad connection between you and your children,it works wonderfully too, when you have multiple children doing the aforementioned level.
- The daily lesson plan seems too much ! How tin we make this work with all our extra activities ?
Even though Moving beyond the page offers a lesson plan for the whole yr level I accept talked to many people that merely experience overwhelmed by information technology and take to tweak it. When I first opened the curriculum books, i felt overwhelmed myself and it took me a little while to brand information technology correct for us. I accept institute that with most "box curriculum" you have to tweak it a trivial here or there, after all it was " mass designed " by someone else for many other people. I now plan once a calendar week, read through the next 5-6 lessons ahead and run across what activities seem right for us, and which nosotros might merely skip. I have found that MBTP offers a good variety of different activities in each lesson, but non each one is a must and there is sometimes a bit too much repetition for us.
And so there is another way. You only do non take to choose the whole years worth. The curriculum works well every bit a supplemental curriculum, or just unit studies. You could hands option and cull a few units ( even let your children pick) and just exercise those. Remember the dazzler of homeschooling is that you can pick and choose. You can get in right for your family unit. Every one is different so there is never a one fits all solution.
- Can I exercise levels with multiple, unlike aged children ?
Absolutely. Each level has a suggested age range, like 6-viii, eight-10 then on. Well-nigh oft kids will fit into the suggested level. Reading can easily be washed together in a group and many activities are enagging and fun for younger kids besides. Near often if you follow the guided historic period proffer and possibly exercise the placement exam you volition figure out if it will piece of work .
Also many activities in the lessons take options. You lot can make it easier or harder. You lot can have your younger child work on an easier version than your older one, but they volition notwithstanding both take the benefit of learning from each other.
- I see a lot writing activities , worksheets and worry my child will not enjoy it ?
Information technology all depends on yous and how yous will use the curriculum. Each lesson has a broad option of activities, some that might simply be suggestions or little task for your area, like get outside to the park and discover different types of habitats. Another day the action volition encourage you lot to go to the zoo, or become interview somebody in the community. Then in that location will be "worksheets" that go along with the subjects, simply they are often different than your average worksheets. They often require a piffling talk, additional discussion and inspiration to go your child started. Besides you will train your child towards independent research online. Many of these things were a big change for us at the beginning of homeschooling in full general (peculiarly for my child that spend two years in public schoolhouse) , only over time and a bit of guidance she learnt to work more fluently and contained on her own.
During some units you will come upon some really big activities (go to the Zoo, go to the embankment, go to the museum ) that might just crave a day of " vacation". Oftentimes this might not fit into your schedule at all, simply it has opened us up to exercise more " fun stuff" in full general and nosotros try to just make time. Some activities seemed ordinary at first and I thought most skipping them, but so when I idea near information technology a scrap more I constitute that we so often do not pay attention to the little things and this activity will actually , really permit the states focus on THAT particular thing nosotros are trying to learn, like going to the zoo and just picket i certain type of animals or even effort to accommodate a meeting with a zookeeper and have a long discussion.
Back in Texas we went to the Zoo every few months ,going to just run into the birds for example seemed "ordinary" only how often do nosotros cease upwardly at the zoo, attempt to do it all and are not able to give each animal its special attention ? How ofttimes do you go and really just lookout the "hawks" for 30 minutes and try to study merely them ?
Sometimes there will be activities when yous are supposed to literally "interview" people. I am a shy person myself and honestly often would merely rather avert conversation with strangers. These activities have gotten u.s.a. out of our fiddling bubble. They have brought u.s. closer to our community and permit my children fifty-fifty be in charge. We have non e'er been able to interview people for every field of study suggested of grade, just so ofttimes once we thought well-nigh finding the right person we were surprised who we found that could participate and have peachy information. For instance, when my little one asked ane of our librarians dorsum in Texas what he did in his task, if he enjoyed , what made him get a librarian etc…. She had the biggest and proudest smile on her face and still often talks near this little action.
When nosotros don't find a matching person, there are always options. There are many books that describe people with dissimilar jobs, cultural backgrounds or experiences. Sometimes we fifty-fifty get lucky and find a bang-up video on YouTube about it.
There are many means yous can make the curriculum flexible and very hands on.
- My child is still struggling with writing in general. Can we make it work ?
Many studies show that especially for younger children, narrating and dictation are great tools for learning. If your child struggles at the beginning to course her own stories try to come up with ideas on how to go far easier. Nosotros use a white board or chalk board and often brain storm. Some activities in the younger levels merely require a few words, while others might encourage your child to come upwards with a whole story. When we struggle with ideas we take hold of our pencils and colors and just try to make the lesson fun.
If yous are ever curious about the curriculum, feel costless to write me or the visitor itself, directly. I am only an affiliate with them and do not work for them and exercise non necessarily earn much for anything I write nigh the curriculum, unless you click on the trivial links and actually social club something. But we have honestly enjoyed well-nigh of our time with it and I feel good about sharing our adventure and telling others most the curriculum itself. Everyone is different though and just like homeschooling itself, non everyone will like it. In the end you know your child and family unit best and can make the conclusion. I am just another homeschool mom, sharing our time of learning and living. If you are a little more curious about trying it, y'all tin can ever society a exam unit of measurement, try it and run into if this will work out at all, instead of spending your money on a whole twelvemonth level !
So long and equally always,
Happy Homeschooling
After we finished Concept ane of 6-8 I felt similar I needed to change things up a little. I ever attempt to look ahead, what each level from both kids will be dealing with and saw that Concept 3 would line up pretty well with the 3rd Unit from Concept ane from 9-11 . In 6-8 you lot will be learning a lot about civilization with your little i and information technology was one of the units and concepts she was most excited about. So, I figured why not. Information technology matches upward wonderfully with the Tall Tales from nine-11 and the Myths and Folktales from 6-viii.
Afterwards a niggling bit more than enquiry I also found tons of books our library actually has for these. For a pocket-size library, our library had hundreds of books with Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Mexican, Native American tales. I call back I spent nearly an hour going through all of them and brought dwelling a huge stack of nearly 100 books. In my defense, our library is actually renovating and trying to empty their room while they exercise it 😉
When we did the little activity page of unlike kinds of transportation in the globe, Venice came up. And when you remind your child about Venice, she will desire to read the OLIVIA goes to Venice volume. It's one of her favorites. So we all hung out together and enjoyed this silly but also beautiful story of Olivia Goes to Venice.
Then nosotros explored Mexico a little fleck more, made some musical instruments and read some more than in this book.
This volume is from the previous year actually, but it is one I pull back out so often. It ever reminds u.s.a. that life around the earth is and so various and oftentimes then dissimilar, notwithstanding there are so many things nosotros all have in mutual. The volume does a great style of telling the stories of some of the kids that are portrayed in the volume.
Too we have cooked a whole lot this week. Nosotros made a whole lot of Mexican food, bought sushi and as well tried our luck with Chinese noodles. Really information technology all turned out rather yummy, everyone was so inspired and excited to help and eat that I pretty much forgot to take pictures. We also made some fun mexican instruments and listened to all sorts of music, thank you YouTube.
We had also found this Cat in the Hat volume at the library and it was a great way to cover a lot of Holidays quickly. Not very detailed information but a fun intro about many different cultures, 1 of those books she can easily read over and over once again on her own without much needed extra explanation.
Another book that worked perfectly with this lesson is
This one actually does an astonishing job at telling about all holidays all around the earth and if you are looking for even more than actress ideas and crafts this one is a must !
We ended up this lesson by researching a bit more online and as well sentinel some more travel kids. My youngest was really in awe with Venice that twenty-four hours and since it is as well Februrary, the fourth dimension of Carnevale, nosotros really enjoyed " travelling" through the earth a little bit more than.
They take so many keen video's that give kids a fun, quick mode to introduce them to different cultures. It's one travel show my kids don't get bored of.
I am really excited near the residue of this unit 🙂 It is full of discovery, fun crafts and lots of room for exploration !
Tomorrow we will offset reading this book and I am curious what places and traditions we will notice !
We are so excited for this unit to start. I stopped at our local volume store to see if they had any other books that would fit this unit. Since we are still fairly new to this identify, it was only our second visit. But on our offset I swore I had seen that red book and was and then upset I nearly missed my chance getting it.
Luckily after request the lady at the counter, she looked information technology up and they yet had a copy. It was a bit pricier than i expected merely supporting the local shop with a local book, merely seemed correct. I honey modest book stores, and could imagine the girls growing up here and this being their favorite identify. 1 of those stores and places where they know your proper name, your favorite authors and must reads.
Then, we just started with Lesson 2 and are working on our dream catcher from the 9-11 Level.
The Kit is a small-scale i, I wish MBTP would sometimes spend a little bit more money on amend kits. ( or I wish i'd take time to just inquiry those before and order my own) both obviously has it'due south benefits. With getting the KIT you get everything and inappreciably accept to purchase annihilation in betwixt for the projects. Less time preparing and planning. At least with this you get a neat introduction and if they really enjoy an activity yous tin can decide to spend more time and coin on a project and exercise it once more, or maybe in a group with friends. Great co-op thought…
Anyways, at starting time making the web seemed actually disruptive to her, just then we found this swell trivial tutorial and she was able to make the whole web on her own. She even added the beads in the middle. In the stop I was surprised how cute information technology really turned out and once we were into it, we could take made a dozen 😉
